Hello,

Welcome to my new site. This site along with my photographic art,  is a work in progress.

I love classic black-and-white photography. Kodak Plus-X film, luster paper, developer, stop bath, fixer and all the tactile joy of actually touching, smelling and feeling the images come-to-life under a dull red light (I collect vinyl records for the same love of the tactile experience ).

I have warm memories of toiling away in my darkroom after school. I would spend hours working to make the elusive perfect  print. I was fascinated with the science of photography but honestly, not that great at actually taking well composed pictures.   I  went to college to study Imaging and Photographic Science at Rochester Institute of Technology and lived around the corner from the great George Eastman house while there. I've always been a technical geek with a mediocre artistic talent. Due to my insecurities and critical self appraisals, I would very rarely share my images - even with my closest of family. Recently, I decided to move into my "serious discomfort zone" and start to share some my images with the hope that the process will help  stretch my artistic muscles and maybe even help me improve my skills.

Years ago, I discovered carbon printing and was instantly attracted to the  digital sciences and modern implementation of bringing darkroom-like, archival monochrome images to life - without the darkroom but with most of the feel. I welcome you to join me on my journey.

Please contact me if you want to see, feel and experience this type of photography. If by chance  there is an image that "speaks to you" in my collection, good or bad - leave me a comment. Please share your feedback. And, of course, please contact me directly and I will create a one-of-a-kind, hand-crafted, signed,  carbon ink print of your own.

All my best,

Howard Mahran
